The final rig design turned out to be very simple. It is basically a long steel rod with socket joints at each end.

On one end, the socket joint is a small one and attaches to a small fixing designed to screw on to the model. On the other end the socket joint is bigger and attaches to a heavy base and weight. I have made 2 of these.
